Our Dreamy Hanging Bed

Ever since I was a child I dreamed of having  a hanging bed, enjoying an afternoon nap as wind lightly blows and birds softly sing me to sleep. I have kept that dream alive over the years by compiling a file filled with pictures, stories of cozy cabins and homes with whimsy hanging beds, it wasn't until we moved to this house that we had the perfect place for one.

I wanted the bed to be slightly larger than a twin mattress with extra space to stack a few books and a cup of tea.  It also had to be inexpensive, finding materials for this project was easy...It's amazing what a stack of wood can turn into...

After the platform was built we gave it a coat of white primer, thanks to Grant who has his own sprayer he made short work of it...

Next the finish coat a fun lush green paint, the sprayer makes a perfect finish...

Next we measure and drill holes in each corner with a Rockler drill bit.

It was a little tricky finding the perfect place to hang the bed, but with a few heads together we managed to get it in the right spot.

I love it when my husband Bob gets into a project, he had the perfect idea for hanging the bed. He braided the rope just like he did in Boy Scouts, the braided knots are strong and wonderful.

To keep the ropes from fraying Bob brush a small amount of Gorilla Glue to the ends of each rope after the knots were completed.

Bob's finished rope knots....He is still such a boy scout!

We found the perfect spot to screw in the eye bolts

Clamping four boards to the bed helped hold it up as we worked to make the ropes even.

Rockler clamp bolts are added to the bottom of the bed  the rope pushed through to hold the bed in place...

I search for the perfect mattress, this one is perfect not to deep and only $32.

I couldn't wait to see  the hanging bed all made up, my childhood dream almost finished, hummmm what will I put on it?   I went to my linen closet pulled out a few blankets trying to put a few things together that would work well together, opened an old trunk to find a few pillows, and while I was looking, something wonderful happened.

Our granddaughters were visiting and Uncle Grant made Angelia and Chiara the most wonderful fort in our new hanging bed. I guess maybe a hanging bed is a dream in every child's mind, I am so thankful I can share it with all my family...Dream complete, even better than I had hoped for.

Today in the breeze Grant took a little nap, then Bob...it made me smile....God is good!

Blessings,  Julie
